How much saran-wrap would it take to cover a Volvo XC 70?

My neighbor got a new Volvo XC70 when she got her license, and for an April Fools joke, I want to completely cover her car in saran-wrap making it impossible for her to get in. How much should I use and how much will it cost?|||37 rolls and 120 dollars.|||Haha that is going to be so funny! You know that Aprils Fools Day isn't until like 6 months, but that is good you are planning ahead:) Well it all depends on how many layers you are planning on doing I would say use 2-3 of those GINORMOUS saran-wraps that you get at like Sam's Club or Costco. That is about 30 dollars, I think. Good luck and Happy April Fools Day!:)|||It would be cheaper to get some of the clear protective wrapping that they use on furniture during a move. You should be able to get that at any uhaul dealer or at an office supply.

Saran Wrap is expensive and not nearly as strong as the furniture wrap.|||I would use bubble wrap. and shipping tape, Price minimal, reaction priceless|||37 rolls and 120 dollars.

My neighbor got a new Volvo XC70 when she got her license, and for an April Fools joke, I want to completely cover her car in saran-wrap making it impossible for her to get in. How much should I use and how much will it cost?|||Here's an idea.... Shrink wrap.

this is a film that you will see used at the local Home Depot to prepare pallets before lifting them away. There is a source listed below if you can't find a warehouse willing to sell you a roll. I would estimate that youy will need one of the 10"x500' rolls to cover the car well, figuring a 4 inch overlap every time around and a few turns under the car to wrap the hood.

How much would replacing the struts in a rear drive Volvo run (ball park figure)?

A friend of mine has an old Volvo 940 that needs them replaced in the front and he would like to have an idea as to what the cost could be. He has the struts already and just needs someone to install them as it's too big a job for him and it's too cold out at this time of year for a shade tree mechanic such as he. It's rear wheel drive and in very good condition.|||This type of work can vary from mechanic to mechanic. A lot of people are out of work and willing to lower their labor rates just to earn a buck. I know I recently did my struts in my old 1994 Saab 900 and a mechanic buddy of mine did all the work in about an hour and a half. At say $30 an hour for someone looking for an odd job you could easily get this done for about $45-60. One good idea is to post an ad on craigslist stating what needs to be done and trust me, people WILL contact you for the work. If your friend needs any other parts for his volvo tell him to visit www.goodcheapparts.us. The site is a good reference for many discount parts dealers online many of which offer free shipping. My advice never go to the local Napa or other Parts Store unless you need to parts today. 9 times out of 10 you can find super deals online and have it at your door in just a couple of days. Good luck with the job.|||$200 to $300.

What year did the Volvo 240, switch from the 4spd w/push button overdrive to the 5spd manual Transmission?

What year did the Volvo 240 series switch from the 4spd w/push button overdrive to the 5spd?

Also, what was the shift pattern for both transmissions including reverse gear?

Thank you

|||At least in the United States, 1987 was the first year of the five speed manual transmission.

The pattern was "H" pattern 1-4, fifth up and to the right. On the 4 w/push button, it was just an H pattern.

Reverse, was to the left and up, with a ring on the shifter to keep it from being entered when selecting first gear. Both transmissions had reverse in the same position.

Are the front and back oxygen sensors in a 1999 Volvo S70 the same?

My 1999 Volvo S70 threw the code P0420, Catalyst Pressure Below Threshold or something along those lines. I just replaced my catalytic converter last july, and replaced the air filter not long after the code was thrown. The guy at Autozone said this probably means I need to replace the 02 sensor. I was wondering if the front and rear sensors are identical, or if they are two different parts.|||Call the guy at Azone, or go see them...have them look it up again, and they'll tell you...could be either way.

Does anyone have a Volvo mechanic in the Everett WA area that can be recommended?

My 1999 V70 manual recommends a timing belt at 105K. I should be there by the end of the weekend. Anybody had any luck with a trustworthy Volvo Mechanic in the Everett WA area?|||No sure about the Everett area, but in Seattle on Beacon Hill, Larry's Volvo is fantastic. Check out the links below.

I was wondering if the front and rear sensors are identical, or if they are two different parts.|||The sensors are not the same. Not same part number.

You did not specify if the car was a Turbo model or not.

This makes a difference when diagnosing issues like this by code.|||its a 1999 model, could be that the oxygen sensors are not fully tighten. also you could have a exhaust leak. maf sensor could be bad see what it is reading. , then again the oxygen sensor could be the problem, the vehicle is 12 years old if you never replaced it.

the sensors are not the same|||The pre and post oxygen sensors are not the same that the length of the wiring are different. The sensor itself maybe the same.

Back to your P0420, the 02 sensor may not be the problem. Go back to the shop that replaced the cat and have them check for cracks of the new cat installation.

Can the ugly black bumper on the side of my volvo be removed or painted over?

I just bought a 2003 volvo s40 and really hate the bumper on both sides of the car and the front and back. I have seen other newer models of this car the have theirs blended in with the color of their car is this possible to do with a professional paint job or can i remove it. Thanks!|||Yes. A paint shop will have the capability to paint plastics. Also, if you want to save a few bucks Meguiars Extreme Detailing Plastic Finish will make it all one shade of gray / black instead of the "faded in splotches" look. An application will usually be suitable for 2-3 months in the most severe conditions (windward oahu).

I have a 1997 Volvo 850 T-5 and it needs new brake pads. What kind of brake pads do I need?

I have a 1997 Volvo 850 T-5 and it needs new brake pads. And I'm looking online for the correct pads to replace the ones I have now, what kind of brake pads do I need?|||http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-850/Brakes/B鈥?/a>

Here you go, Ipd has been specializing in volvos since 1963. The page show all information on which brake pads you need, and, they're at a good price.|||The kind that fit on your car. The best way to get them is to go into your local parts store, and say "I need brake pads for a 1997 Volve 850 T-5 please." They will look it up on the computer, perhaps ask a question or two, and then hand you what you need.

|||Get EBC brake pad's google em ' alot of online stores sell em for about 30 dollar's + UP , guaranteed shipping .:)|||Ones just like stock will work just fine.||| Standard pads to fit the car you described.. don't buy economy pads( they don't hold up) and don't buy expensive carbon fibre pads (waste of money)...|||You have a T5. Don't skimp on your pads. There are basically three compositions of pads available without getting into the super expensive racing grade. These are: organic, semi-metallic and ceramic.

The cheap organics are lousy! They have a soft pedal feel, they are prone to heating up and 'glazing' of your rotors and if you are hard on your brakes, then they will not last. Also, when organics are hot, they have the worst stopping power. Don't even think of getting organic pads.

Semi-metallic or ceramic pads would be the way go depending on your budget.

Although first introduced as far back as 1985 on some new vehicles, mass after-market applications for ceramic-based disc brake pads are just now becoming widely available. Approximately 33 percent of all new vehicles, domestic and foreign combined, now have ceramic-based disc brake pads. The newest generation of ceramic brake lining compounds contain no chopped steel fibers or steel wool as found in earlier semi-metallic linings, but instead substitute ceramic compounds and copper fibers. These changes provide modern ceramic-based lining materials the capability of handling today's high brake temperatures with less heat fade, faster recovery time, and less wear on both the pads and rotors.'

Of even more value to brake repair facilities is the ability of ceramic lining compounds to significantly reduce annoying brake noise or squeal, which is the No. 1 consumer complaint relating to brake service. Ceramic compounds dampen noise and move brake pad vibrations to a frequency outside of our human hearing range, 20 Hz through 20,000 Hz. As with earlier disc brake pad designs, some ceramic pad applications may also incorporate other noise-reducing features such as chamfers, slots and insulator shims. One leading after-market manufacturer has gone as far as naming its line of ceramic brake pads "Quiet Stop."

Another positive characteristic associated with ceramic brake lining materials is the absence of visible brake dust, a feature that any vehicle owner with stylish wheels will appreciate. All brake materials, ceramic included, will produce some brake dust. Earlier semi-metallic and organic brake compounds left a brownish black dust on wheels. In comparison, ceramic compounds produce a light-colored dust that is much less noticeable and does not attach itself to wheels. |||look on www.eeuroparts.com

Can anyone who owns the S60 and used to own Volvo 850 comment on the difference in easy of parking?

I own Volvo 850 and it has a good turning circle and not too bad for parking.

I've heard the S60 (both latest and previous version) have very poor turning circle.

How much harder is it too park? Is it actually very hard to get it into the spot or just takes longer because of the turning circle.|||An S60 is a shorter car than the 850 so is easier to park. I would say that the turning circle of the S60 is no worse that the 850.

What's included in the labor hour on Volvo's maintenance?

The last notice I have for the price of the labor hour on the Official Volvo Dealership is $125.00.

Do you know what kind of services are included in that rate?. Only the time that the technician works on the car, or something else?

Thanks in advance.|||It's only the time the technician works on the vehicle. One hour equals $125.00. Kind of a rip off if you ask me, considering a Volvo is now just an overpriced Ford.|||It means they charge 125.00 per hour based on a flat rate system. If book time calls for an hour and they do it in 20 minutes you pay 125.00, but if it takes them 3 hours you only pay 125.00

Put some tape around the arm that is above the painted surface (to protect the paint). Loosen the nut (do not remove it entirely - this will protect the threads).

Is a 1995 Volvo 940 a good vehicle, or should I keep looking?

Recently I crashed my truck and I need a new car for cheap. A teacher at my school is offering my a 1995 Volvo 940 for 750 dollars. The only issue with the car is that is needs new brakes. The reason that the price is reduced so radically is because they believe that it would not sell for higher as their son, (the previous owner) ripped off the upholstry and padding in the cieling. This is a relatively easy fix. Is it worth it to buy this vehicle?|||I'm looking for a decent 940 myself and if a brake job and new headliner will fix everything, then it's a pretty good deal. Does the new Volvo S80 have a flashing rear windshield brake light?

I saw an S80 where the third brake light - the bar in the rear windshield - flashed like a warning every time the driver hit the brakes. Is this an add-on or something new for Volvo? I have a 1999 S80 and am interested in adding this safety feature to my car. Thanks!|||No this is not factory installed. To my knowledge some car companies (mercedes) are starting to look at putting a feature in to strobe the brake lights in emergency braking maneuvers, but this is not the norm. Especially if the brake light flashes every time the vehicle brakes, then this would defeat the purpose of alerting people to an emergency stop or a driver attempting an emergency braking maneuver. I've included a link below of a sample brake light flasher add-on. Lexus also has something similar to the mercedes, but it acts more so in an offensive sense and not a defensive sense. On their european models of the LS 600h they have a rear millimeter wave radar that monitors traffic behind you and if a person is coming up too fast when you are slowing or stopped, it will flash your brake lights at them as a precautionary measure. If you would like to add this feature onto your car, look into a third party market as your volvo dealer will not do this for you for liability reasons. Volvo does have something called crash warning with brake assist, where if you are about to rear-end someone it will flash a simulated brake light on your windshield to alert you to them stopping. Let me know if you need any more assistance or have any more questions about this or other automotive safety issues.|||Well it could be a possibility seeing as how the new s80 has many new groundbreaking safety features (it is a Volvo after all); but i haven't read anything about it,what i do know though, is that you can get and aftermarket part that will let you do just that. I'm actually considering buying one for an 89 Volvo 240 I'm gonna be buying soon. iv seen afew different ones for sale online, just type in something to the effect of "flashing third brake lamp" and you should get some results, if not just play around with similar words. |||Yes / No it's an option chosen by the factory. My neighbors flashing rear brake light goes right along with the rhythm of her wiggly 4 cylinder that did not come with motor mounts - just two cans of cranberry sauce on each side of the engine :(

I need a hood and grill for a 1993 Volvo 960. Can I take one from a 1995? And how about differant models. And if so What year can I go up to?|||while this question is best answered with a "hollander interchange manual" at a salvage yard.

the 960 grills, hood, and lamp assemblies will all bolt up and hook up electrically.between the years.

meaning that if you purchase the hood and complete head-lamps grill, marker lights, valances etc.

all from the same car it will all bolt right up to yours and look o.k. even if lamp styles are different from your model.

note if your damaged car has headlamp wipers and the "new parts" are not from a car that had this option you will also loose this option as the headlamp assemblies are different at the bottom to

accommodate the motor and brackets [this may only to american market models]

by the same token if the "new parts have the option and your car did not it will still all bolt up but you will have to "find the harness disconnects on your wiring harness [yes they are there but hidden and taped back] you will also need the washer reservoire and related tubing check valve etc. and yes the wires will be found for the second pump motor.

How to remove the outdrive on a Volvo Penta?

How do you remove the outdrive on a 1997 3.0L Volvo Penta GS, SX Outdrive? Can someone give me step by step instructions please? Thanks.|||First remove the back cover. it has a long machine screw on the bottom and half a wing nut in a slot at the top. Do not unscrew the top one completely, just enough so the cover comes off.

Under there you will find a "T" bar and link rod remove it. Then 2 6mm bolts hold the shift cable on. Take all the fasteners off the shift cable so it will slide off the lower unit.

Now raise it some and go after the exhaust boot and u-joint boot where they are clamped to the lower. Next below the exhaust boot is the water line. Get it un clamped as well and inspect the manifold for air leaks.(you do know there is no water pump in the volvo lower unit?)

Next is 2 allen heads holding the "helmet" steering yoke on.

Finally is 2 big pins going in from each side Held in place with 2 allen pinch bolts. These pins have a puller hole drilled and taped in them should they be tight. Now you must support the lower or put it on the ground as it will spin on you and break something.

With the pins out, it should be loose and come right out.

How much should it cost me to repair an oxygen sensor on a Volvo 850?

I took our Volvo 850 GLT SW to the mechanic and they said it had a faulty Bank 1, Sensor 2 on it (sensor code PO136). The mechanic is recommending that I replace the sensor and update the harness kit for $500. Is this in the right ballpark for the cost? And is it a critical fix or can I let it go...the car has 157,000 miles on it.|||The above posts are totally wrong, this is not a ford, or whatever else. Yes, $500.00 for a dealership to replace one oxygen sensor is normal. The part is about $250.00, just depnds on were you are, and the new sensor comes with a little extra wire harness the techinician must add in line. Labor should be 1.5 hours to 2.0 hours just depends on how the shop runs its labor times. Anymore then 2 hours and something is wrong, so look at the breakdown of costs on your repair order and question anything.|||You should be able to get the two Bosch O2 sensors for under $300 if you mail order. Installation should take 15 minutes for one. The most difficult part would be taking the two sensors out.

Knowing that most mechanics would charge minimal 1 hour service, $500 do not appears to be that excessive. Also need to wait until exhaust system to cool down. Make sure to get OR Bosch O2 sensors. Youer mechanic may charge for OE sensors, and install cheap $40 universal sensors.|||The part OEM by Bosch is about 175. You can get a replacement part of unknown quality for about 40. Do not know about harness kit 500 is a bit high. Not critical but depending upon what state you are in you may not be able to get an inspection sticker due to emmissions problems. At 157k you car is just broken in. Get a second opinion from another shop.|||I replaced 1 of 4 on my 97 Explorer myself for $58 from Kragens, prior I drove it for a year, till I had to get it smogged.

I hope he's replacing all of them for that much.|||If it is an oxygen sensor, it should cost no more than $100 for the part. I think $500 is a bit much.

If it includes labor it might not be and it's not that hard to put pads on so I say you do it yourself. As for the pads, just go to autozone or one of those kinds of stores and tell them your cars brand/model and they'll give you some choices.

I really like this one 2008 Volvo before I test drive it I was just wondering if the maintenance costs are really high or not since Volvo is a bit more of a luxury brand, because if its going to be like $100 or more for an oil change I don't want it.|||Your camry is a good car ...? But volvos can be very expensive if you have them serviced by volvo. They cost no more, than another at a regular hourly shop. I get my oil changed for $ 34.95 Parts could get costly. My timing belt kit is 250.00 which included tensioner and idler pulley. Water pump is around 70.00 Take it to dealer and they will charge even more i am sure. Volvo makes a good solid car though.|||It usually depends on how you use the vehicle that will dictate servicing intervals and costs. Having the car serviced at a dealer is just plain nuts because of the cost involved. You can have the vehicle serviced at any automotive maintenance facility. As a matter of fact, I recommend that if you purchase a Volvo you find an experienced, reputable and competent independent mechanic to take care of it. That's what I did after countless arguments with my local dealer about what is and is not covered under their warranty terms. I went all the way to Volvo of North America and still had the same problems with the dealer, who is still in business by the way.

You will probably find that Volvo parts are expensive, sometimes more so than for other makes.

To the salesman who responded to your question: I'm certainly happy that you work for a dealership that is above average. It's not always the case. My local dealer is an abomination and for that reason I will never have another new Volvo. I have owned fourteen Volvos in forty-two years and still have four so you now know that I'm not bashing the brand, just the new crap that's on the market now and some of Volvo's dealers who have no idea about customer service or business ethics.|||Let me tell you the "stealership's for Volvo " are on a diet that says every 7500 your car MUST come in for service in order for the warranty to remain in effect. You must come back to the dealer or a ASE certified mechanic for everything including tires. This is NOT a vehicle that is cheap to maintain.

Oil is changed only once every 7500 miles, while the dealers use organic oil, most smart volvo owners have stepped up to Mobil 1 which is 8.00 a quart %26amp; your vehicle requires 8 quarts + a filter %26amp; oil ring (18.00).

Generally the Stealerships in the Mid Atlantic Region charge 100~125 for this service . You can get in done yourself for around 85 . Some people see this as expensive some don't. Consumer Reports gave the 2008, 2009 Volvo S80's a high reliability rating this year.|||The answer above me could not be more wrong. Volvos are shipped with a 5w30 Synthetic blend oil. They are recommended for service every 7,500 miles, that is true. It also clearly states that you can change plus or minus 1,500 miles from 7,500.

IN NO WAY are you "required" to bring the Volvo to the DEALERSHIP to maintain your warranty coverage. You will extend the life of the vehicle if you do, but you can take it to ANY station for an oil change and still be in complete compliance with you warranty requirements. Just keep your receipts.

Your question is tough to answer because NO vehicle is the same to maintain. Volvo is the least expensive European import to own and maintain on an average.

It sounds like the other gentleman has a problem with dealerships. As an employee of a Dealership I always represent my product truthfully annd take offense at being likened to a thief.|||I own a 2004 volvo s60 and i have to say i love my car. My wife especially loves it because its built like a tank so she feels our daughter is safer in a volvo then almost any other car out there.

It does cost a little more here and there for regular maintenance, i go to good year for my oil changes and it comes out to be about $80. I have noticed if you do anything threw the Volvo dealership it costs more, but the people there are just so damn friendly and helpful its almost worth the extra money just to have them do it because of how nice they are lol

p.s. i dont work for Volvo :)|||I bought a 1998 S70 new. I spent more on the car keeping it repaired on the road than I paid for it brand new. Volvos are wallet eaters. Unless you have plenty of money, find a nice Toyota or Subaru.

Will interior parts from the Volvo 240 fit into a Volvo 242?

I'm looking to replace the armrests and a few other interior parts on a 1979 Volvo 242 DL, and was wondering if the armrests and other parts from a newer Volvo 240 (1985-93, somewhere in that range) would fit. They look to be pretty much the same part, but wanted a second opinion before I hop on eBay and start buying. Thanks!|||Both cars are 240s. All 242 (two door car) parts will fit on your vehicle. Some 244 (four door) and 245 (wagon) parts will fit, but not all.|||Volvo used almost the same parts throughout the years in the 240 series, so yes, they should fit fine.|||Not to be obvious, but the later 240 is a 4-door, and your 242 is a 2-door. Some of the mounting points will be different. The parts themselves ARE quite similar but until you pop the door and have a look at the screw holes, etc. you won't know for sure.

Is anyone familliar with the Volvo Extended Service plan offered by Volvo Dealerships?

I am wondering if it is actually a plan from Volvo, or is it a 3rd party that Volvo uses such as MPP inc. Although this is called an 'extended service' plan and not an extended warranty, does anyone know how it differs from the warranty that covers the car for the first 50,000...|||The difference is typically that the extended warranty has a list of items that are covered - and a list of items that are not covered. Also, repairs typically have to be pre-authorized by the warranty company - something your service dealership must do before doing repairs. Sometimes depending on your particular warranty, you may have a decuctible ranging from $0 to $250 or more.

"extended service plan" is just about terminology - it means an extended warranty.

The factory warranty that Volvo puts on the car will cover a lot more items and be more straightforward in terms of authorization. Something in between will be a Volvo extended warranty plan such as VIP or CPO.

When you buy a car your dealership should have all this information available to you.|||When I was approached about buying one of these plans for my Volvo, it was from a third party supplier. I looked into what was covered and what was not and the fine print in these plans is astounding. Also, know in advance what the cost of the plan is. Do not buy into the dealer's "Ill give it to you at my cost" ploy.

Know the plan's limitations and its ultimate cost before laying out any money.

Volvo 1800 clutch will not disengage when vehicle is running?

Advice on how to troubleshoot and/or repair.

Vehicle was parked for over three months while I was out of the country, when I returned in July, the clutch would not disengage when depressed, so I could not put it into gear.

1967 Volvo 1800s|||There could be multiple problems. First, this vehicle is equipped with a hydraulic clutch. There is a master cylinder on the firewall that supplies fluid to the slave cylinder on the clutch bell housing underneath. Check the master cylinder fluid level. Refill if required. Still no action? Then the system may have air in it which must be bled out. You can't bleed a hydraulic clutch system like you would a set of brakes. You need a hand vacuum pump to do it properly. Once all the air is bled and there is still no clutch action, the clutch disc might be frozen to the flywheel from the vehicle sitting for so long. The quick fix is to try to rock the car in gear to free up the disc. If that doesn't work, disassembly is necessary. My money is on air in the system.|||there is nothing mechanically wrong with your car [move the car into an open area] put the car in gear and while holding the clutch pedal down put it into 1st gear and start the engineTHE CAR WILL MOVE next floor and release the gas pedal in rapid bursts. the clutch disc that has rusted to the flywheel will break free of the rust and all things will be back to normal

good luck and do not attempt in close quarters or around people or livestock|||Being a 67 it is likely a "rod and lever" setup, so crawl underneatha nd just make sure that they rod an lever are actually connected, check for free play. If it is nothing simple like this, then you may not be able to tackle this yourself. Good luck.|||I have a better way to free up a frozen clutch....just put the car in gear with the engine OFF, then start the car and it will jump forward (yes of course you need a clear runway to do this, let's not be silly about it).

Definitely it could be a clutch disc stuck to the flywheel.

Does your clutch pedal feel softer or weaker than usual? Do you have fluid in the clutch master cylinder?

If the answers are NO and YES, you might have a frozen clutch.

The method I suggested is a bit barbaric but it works. I've done it a couple of times.

And once it's loose, that's all you have to do.

But by all means bleed out your hydraulic system before you go tearing the car apart.

At what milage does the timing belt on a 2004 Volvo v70 xc need replacement?

we recently purchased a 2004 v70 xc from a HONDA dealer whose service dept couldn't answer the question. Our next resource will be a local Volvo dealer.|||That is correct. The dealer will know for sure. I am a dealer.

The timing belt needs to be changed at the 112500 maintenence schedule, no sooner.

Feel free to email me any other questions at rbulmer@gengras.com|||the dealer would know for sure......you could also check volvo's website......generally most timing belts should be replaced every 60,000-75,000 miles!!!!

Would a volvo s60 be expensive to insure for a new driver?

I have a good gpa, i'm a male, and want a car. Would a volvo s60 t5 be expensive to insure? What about a volvo s60R? Thanks in advance!|||For my 2000 Volvo V70 XC AWD (costs more because its 4wd) i pay around 500 for 6 months for full coverage. Its not too bad, its worth it considering how safe the car is. 240 volvo radiators do NOT have standard radiator caps....

My 1994 Volvo 940 stops running after a few minutes any one knows why?

My 1994 Volvo 940 cut off on my wife on her way home it took 4 starts for her to make it home.I have changed the spark plugs and checked the fuel pump and there is a steady flow of fuel .Usually it starts right back up but it stops after about 3-5 minutes.Sometimes it may take hours before it starts again.I would appreciate any help any one has to offer. My Volvo is non turbo.|||There may be a problem with the car's computer. If you are not getting a check engine light, then that may be the case. It could also be the fuel pump relay going bad and is switching off the fuel pump.|||Thats a simple one because its a volvo :) sounds like it could be an electrical fault with the distributor. GOODLUCK|||sounds like its a coil or another eletronic part when it gets hot it dies

Why does my 740 Volvo make clanking noises?

I have a 1988 Volvo that recently started making clanking noises from the passenger side under the hood. It is very loud and only happens when I decelerate or am at a stop. I have no idea what it is but it makes me really nervous.|||There could be several reasons for this, check to see that the battery is secured tightly. Open the bonnet and try to identify where the noise is coming from. It could be that the timing chain needs to be replaced however with out being able to say were the noise is coming from its difficult to say for sure.

Ja.|||Volvo is da **** bro......|||Well if it's not happening all the time then it's not terminal. Just turn the radio up. I'd start worrying when/if something falls off.....which is unlikely. It's an old car, these things are to be expected.

Does anyone know how to get to the taillight bulbs in a 2002 Volvo S60?

My wife's Volvo has a taillight bulb out and I don't want to pay the Volvo shop $100 an hour to replace the bulb. I don't see how the light comes off from the outside. Is it a matter of removing the inside panel in the trunk to get to the bulb assembly? Any assistance is appreciated.|||try accessing it from the inside. there should be a door like thing when you open the trunk. look on the backside of the taillight and check for a door or something. it should be there. also check the manual. it should tell you there as well. these things are usually easily done by yourself. no need for mechanic. good luck|||Look at the manual it should say what bulbs are needed and then go to a local pep boys or auto zone and purchase them

How can I get a duplicate key for a Volvo CX90 for less than $300?

Key duplicating places can't make one because it is an odd shape and has a microchip. And the Volvo dealer wants $300. Yikes!|||if it has a microchip then your only option is the dealer.|||You can't say the 'V' word under $300 and only a locksmith in a very large city would have sufficient call to buy the equipment, software, and tech subscriptions to program them. Therefore the dealer may be your only option.

Just for the record, GM doesn't sell chip keys for $16. They are more along the lines of $48 right now with the price expected to triple as dealerships are closed left and right over the next 12 months. Better hope your local locksmith can do chip keys.|||Depends on which key you get. I have an XC90 and the key fob is about $450 to replace, depending on which dealer I take it to. The "valet" key, the one with out the fob, is about $150-180 depending on the dealer. I bought the key, without having it programed for $25. All that does is open the doors, and turn on the accessories.

Ironically enough, a Porche Cheyenne's key fob is only $350 to replace. Go figure...|||Sorry but Volvo is the only place you can get your key made.

Usually it's around $160 (key+one hour of labor)

What comes to your mind when you hear of or see a Volvo?

What kind of image is Volvo presenting to you, the consumer? What do you think of the drivers of a Volvo?|||When I see older volvos I think the folks are anti-status seekers, more concerned with realible saftey than anything else.

When I see late model volvos I think the folks have more money than brains.|||Married couple with matching sweaters. Child in a car seat with juice spilt everywhere. While the chocolate lab eats away at the seat.|||What comes to mind are those boxy Station Wagons. The owners I always assumed are Leftists. I don't mean democrats, I mean full-blown socialism.

When Ford bought Volvo and changed the cars they just got lost in a sea of similar products. When they just made brick-like safey cars they had real image. They may not have been selling all that many, but at least they had more of a presence, and at least some people had a reason to buy one. Now they're just competing toe-to-toe with whatever's out there.|||Makes me wish I had my Volvo 240 back. When I bought it I was still learning to drive so my first priority was safety. I wanted as much as steel as possible between me and the thousands of pickups %26amp; SUVs on the road without resorting to buying some huge car like an old Cadillac. I had that car for 6 years with very few major problems.|||heard they are great...but once in a while when they break, they can be costly....it depends on how much the car is worth before AND after the repairs...|||KEY WORDS: Safety, no-nonsense, practicality - form over function. Not something that follows the latest trend.

Typical images of some Volvo buyers or drivers are that they tend folks who are environmentally conscious, like the outdoors, have higher than average levels of education. Stereotypical Birkenstock-wearing college professor. The cars are pretty popular in places like the Pacific Northwest (Portland has tons of them) and New England.

However, the more recent Volvos are less distinctive than the old 240 and 140 series cars, that the old Volvo loyalists swear by.|||safety. also... box car.|||I own a Volvo. I'm neither a leftist, socialist, teacher, or educator. I work in technical support and do not wear matching sweaters. I'm not even a democrat!

But, after driving this car, I will definitely buy another Volvo when it's time to get another car. It's comfortable, safe, dependable, and good on gas.|||Safety and a quality made vehicle.... they also look pretty nice these days too.|||I miss my Volvo 740 Turbo Wagon. It was the ultimate anti-status symbol, was extremely safe, handled very well, topped out about 130 or so, was easy to work on, could carry a bunch of people or 3 kegs of beer, and was very comfortable. It's probably the best car I've ever had (I've had 2 Grand Ams, a Grand Prix, and I currently have a Dodge Stratus and a Jeep Cherokee; the Jeep is the only thing that comes close to the Volvo).

When I see people in newer Volvos though, I see people that are just as inconsiderate as other luxury car drivers. It's as if Ford decided to take out the turn signals, just like Toyota did for Lexus, Nissan did for Infiniti, and Honda did for Acura (everyone already knows that Cadillacs, Lincolns, Benzes, Bimmers, Bentlys, and Rolls Royces never came with turn signals...j/k). All kidding aside, it seems that since Ford is starting to let Volvo do it's own thing again, that the soul of Volvo (safe, performance-minded cars) is coming back.

Now only if there were a C30R, S40R, V50R, C70R, S80R, and XC90R...maybe then everyone would take Volvo's idea of performance seriously. (For those that don't know, R is similar to BMW's M, Mercedes' AMG, Nissan's Nismo, Ford's SVT, Cadillac's V, or Chrysler's/Dodge's/Jeep's SRT designations - high performance, limited edition.)|||I think of a person who appreciates craftsmanship in a car. A person who is college educated and practical, that is either in the teaching profession or very family oriented. Safety comes to mind as well as performance minded enthusiast. The image presented is a person who is self confident, may be affluent and a life long Volvo owner. A very practical person, where common sense rules the day. Someone who recognizes value when they see it and appreciates that Volvo still builds it's cars like they used to; exceptionally well.|||well depends on the year of it. coz some are more rugged looking than others.

Where can I find an online source for 1990 volvo 740 v belt installation diagrams?

I have a v belt for my 1990 volvo 740 turbo. I am trying to find out where I can find an installation diagram that I can either download or print out for the v belt which goes to the alternator.|||Your particular Volvo belt for the alternator is simple and straight forward which doesn't necessarily require a diagram. There are 3 belts(not including the timing belt) in front of the engine. One for the a/c,one for the p/s and one for the water pump. The alternator belt is the easiest to replace cause it doesn't require removal of the other belts. However, replacing all 3 belts at the same time is recommended. The size of the p/s and the alternator belts are the same(11.9x1013) and the a/c belt is(13x975). You can probably find these sizes at local auto parts store. To make life easier would be going to an independent volvo shop...it's a fast moving parts so they must have in stock at all times. If the volvo shop doesn't sell loose new parts to u then never do business with them....believe me....but if your looking for used parts then that's a different story...why?...cause it's more lucrative.....and that they have a surplus of used parts that taking up space....like a liquidation sale or something.. I hope this info. helps and feel free to ask for additional questions that u have...Thanx!!!!!!!!!!|||http://www.popularmechanix.com

Somebody hit out Volvo on the Driver side in a parking lot, but they were evidently going fast because they caved in the Driver Side doors. Getting a new used car can be a great experience, but you could run into some expenses that you aren't expecting.

A fuel pump could go, you might run into trouble with the steering, struts or any number of things. Especially on a classic like the 240.

Don't mis-understand, the 240 is bulletproof, and I'm not speaking poorly about your decision, but only suggesting that every car has its own personality that will reveal itself through time.

Get to know the car first.

Check out www.brickboard.com a website for volvo freaks.|||Any good tire retailer can help you here. You have to get rims sized for your particular car, which means having enough clearance so the wheels don't rub on the brake calipers and the tires won't rub on the body/frame when cornering. Also. You can search for other rims Online, with the specific Volvo Offset. 20mm anda 17 x 7.5" size. The actual size of the rim can vary as much as you want really... but don't go putting 20"s on it.. that is just Ridiculus..

How can I replace the water pump and steering pump on my 1996 Volvo 960?

I have a 1996 Volvo 960, wagon. I need to replace the steering and water pump on my wagon, and I am wondering if any how can give me instructions on how to do so...|||the water pump on this car is driven by the timing belt so follow timing belt replacement procedures for this, keeping in mind that you should also replace the belt, idler pulley, tension pulley, and gas-tensioner at the same time.once there the pump is held by 7 bolts and replacement is straightforward[gasket surfaces must be perfectly clean and as this is an interference fit [valve bender] engine the timing belt procedure must critically be adhered too.

as for the power steering foamy fluid means one of two things,

either you have a leak in the system [pump, hoses, rack. causing the pump to cavatate due to low fluid or someone added a fluid that doesn't belong, requiring a flush of the system [once again if fluid was added there is probabley a leak somewhere]

if indeed the pump is found to be bad [very rare] after removing the serpintine belt tensioner the pump can be unbolted and removed.

I just bought a 99 Volvo V70 wagon. The hatch lift mechanism is barely holding. Unlike taditional hatchbacks, ther are no visible hydraulics. I assume there are small hydraulics under the interior panels? Springs?|||They hydraulic rods are behind the panels on both sides running along the roof. When they leak you can sometimes see staining on the panels.|||I have a 99 V70 and I my hatch will only stay up if my car is perfectly level.

What is the life expectancy of a Volvo?

I am looking at a 2001 Volvo wagon w/ 90K thousand miles. They are asking 11,000 for the car. Should I buy it, even though it has high miles? How long do Volvo's usually last?

If it was a Toyota with 90K miles, I wouldn't worry because my Toyota's have always lasted me into the 200K's. Are Volvo's equally reliable?

Thanks!|||Yes.

I'd say it's good for at least 200,000 k, as long as you take care of it.

"Standards of manufacture were exceptionally high - Volvo already had an enviable reputation for longevity (rivalled by only Rolls-Royce), and most of these original cars are, at a mere 20 years old, still running. Contemporary figures showed that over 70% of all the Volvos ever made were still in running order, a stunning figure at a time when the average life expectancy of a car was about ten years. Volvo's average was around twice that.

The early V6 engines are not well-loved these days. They are thirsty and not particularly reliable. To put this in context, they might only last 150-200,000 miles before the timing chain needs replacing. The four-cylinder engine is so tough that, properly maintained, there really is no known way of wearing it out."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A698493|||Make sure the service records indicate the timing belt done or not it is due at 100k and a major service was to be done at 90k,120k

Volvo exp 22+|||I used to be a Toyota/Honda man until my wife finally talked me into trying a Volvo. I will never go back! Volvos are really tough cars, and if taken care of will have less problems than Toyotas. Toyota has been having problems with reliability and quality of craftsmanship lately. I recently looked at five-year-old used Camrys and could not believe how shoddy the construction of those vehilces were!|||does it come with a warranty? r u buying from a dealer,w/guarantee? Is it in good condtion? If all above r true then it could be a very good deal. Volvo for life. And lastly was it talen care.2001 is only 5 yrs old probably just paid it off.|||check condition of automatic trans fluid and service records for this should have been changed at least once you are coming up on timing belt replacement mileage. when you do this replace the water pump, tensioner ,and idler, pulleys and the gas spring.

i recommend changing trans fluid on these cars every 30k miles and every 15 k miles if turbocharged and driven hard. if these things are done and other services kept up with there is no reason for these cars to not exceed 300k several of my customers already have done this and the cars still look and drive good also reread the candiesma letter it is sound advice.|||volvos are equally reliable as toyotas....if not MORE. i've seen volvos with 400,000 miles on them all original. they are VERY good quality cars.|||I think $11,000 is too high for six year old Volvo. Having said that, my experiences with Volvos since 1968 have been mostly good as far as reliability is concerned. They routinely go over 100K miles and a good number certainly reach 200K. I had one that traveled almost 400K and was still in great shape when I traded it. The last new Volvo I purchased was a '98. It was the worst car I ever had, bar none. Volvos have gotten as complicated as other cars and reliability has fallen because of this. They are prohibitively expensive to maintain unless you can do that yourself but that's unlikely in this day of specialized equipment and dealer-only software downloads.

If you want a newer Volvo do some research and I'm sure you can come up with a better deal. Incidentally, when I finally had enough of my '98 disappointment I bought a new Toyota and am very, very pleased. I still have a Volvo but it's a '66, easy to maintain and fun to drive.|||If it was an older Volvo I would say no problem, but the newer ones are rated horrible.Gave up mine when it reached 175,000 it was always maintained at a Volvo Dealer.|||Way too much money for an older car with 90,000 miles. If you want a Volvo, why not purchase a new one? You may pay more for it, but it will come with a new car warranty and you don't have to worry about what the original owner did to the car.

As a second choice, you may want to look for a certified used Volvo 2005-2006 for a few thousand $$ less.

If you get a bad Volvo, you'll hate it! They are expensive to repair and many mechanics don't understand the design and they damage the car.

If you purchase a Volvo, you will be getting one of the safest cars available.

Good luck.

Do Volvo engines normally make a clicking noise?

I just purchased a 2003 Volvo XC90 T6 with only 56k miles on it and have noticed especially when the hood is popped that it makes a clicking noise. Is this normal for this type of car. Mind you, the old T6 motor is a bit of a lemon.

How do I connect 4 stock speakers to an amp on a Volvo S40?

I have a sony xplod 800 watt amp and I want to use it to connect 4 stock speakers in a Volvo S40. On the amp it says 2/1 Channel. What does this mean? Does this mean that I can connect 2 speakers per 1 channel?|||The 2/1 channel means that you can run the amp as a 2 channel, or bridge it into one. Technically yes you can run 2 your 2 factory speakers off of one channel, however here is the problem that you are going to run into, you will either loose fade or balance depending on which way you wire it.

How difficult is it to use the IPD kit to mount a Ford 5.0 Mustang V8 into a Volvo 240 series sedan?

I have read of a few instances of people that have done this plus IPD makes all the parts that allow for this, plus I asked a Volvo guy at a Volvo-only garage how they'd do this and he said the only thing you need besides the new engine is to replace the front springs with 240 station wagon spring to accomodate the weight of the bigger heavier engine.

I want to make the penultimate sleeper car and I figure what better car to catch people with their pants down so to speak would be a Volvo 240 sedan, plus I like how they look and drive anyway.|||I had a 240, loved that car.

The 240 engine bay is certainly more confined than the 740 so just beware that it might not be as simple as the "Volvo guy" said it was. It would be a fine setup though. Why does Vacuum hose keep blowing off the break booster of my Volvo?

I have a 1985 Volvo 740 GLE non-turbo. Whenever I try and use the breaks when the car is cold the plastic connecter between the break booster and the vacuum hose blows of the booster. If I let the car warm up 1st before I drive it the hose doesn't blow off. Does anyone have any suggestions.|||It sounds like you have a blockage in the vacuum hose or connection to the engine intake system, or a 1- way valve in the hose, perhaps even in the connector to the BRAKE booster, that clears after a time, is all I can think of. This might explain it being blown off, the booster bucket would apply pressure to the connection when you push the BRAKE pedal, that normally has vacuum present.

If so, a thorough examination of the hose, connector, engine connector etc. should reveal the problem.

Just had another thought. How is your brake pedal height when you first apply the brakes when cold? Does it go abnormally low? Perhaps you have some air in the brake system or another problem, that allows the pedal to overtravel temporarily, and the bucket/ piston in the booster is actually hitting the connector out.

I bought my 2002 S60 in early 2007 and have always taken it to the dealer for every *single* thing. I was lucky enough to get it off directly from the original owner who had leased the car.

Is it true that Volvo drivers have changed to Toyota Camrys?

It seems that now the Volvo make very good cars that our "Volvo drivers", who we all know and love, have traded their old volvos in and now switched to driving Toyota Camrys. Motorcyclists in particular have hated Volvo drivers in the past due to the generic Volvo drivers' perceived "safety cocoon" which has, in certain cases, invited a certain oblivion to other road users and subsequently hospitalised bikers. Over the last 10 years much of this hatred from all road users has been transferred to 4x4 drivers for the same reason, i.e. the "I'm safe, stuff everybody else" attitude. They know from experience that the average fender-bender leaves them untouched while the other vehicle (so long as its not an artic!) is a write off! Frankly as a group they drive without consideration for other road users of any description. What would cause my 1996 Volvo 850 non turbo to idle unevenly?

I own a 96 Volvo 850 non turbo when your driving it and giving it gas the engine runs at an even RPM but when idling the RPMs go up and down but rapidly short. I was wondering if maybe it the airflow mass meter?|||With my '94 940 (non-turbo B230fd engine /4 spd automatic w/ 134,686 miles), leaks in the exhaust system cause erratic idling. Actually, it's in the shop right now getting the exhaust manifold gasket replaced. In my case, it's either that lower 'back pressure' on the motor affects performance, or something that runs on vacuum or pressure (exhaust gas return circuit or ?) isn't getting what it needs due to the exhaust leak.

There are other causes, but this one is current for me, and easy enough for you to check... are there any visible holes/cracks/breaks in pipes or either muffler or the catalytic converter? Is it noisy? Do you feel puffs of exhaust under your car, or smell exhaust in the cabin or under the front of the car? It was also suggested to me that the catalytic converter might be plugged, but restriction hasn't seemed to affect idle that way in the past, for my Volvos anyway ('87 through '90 244 and 245s, B230f 4 spd autos). So, that gives you something simple to check. If you do find leaks in exhaust system, 'muffler tape' is an inexpensive and quick way to see if that's causing your idle problem... just tape up the holes thoroughly and see if the idle smooths out (but if you can't thoroughly cover the leak you won't know for sure). IF that did work, FIX the problem, as the metal tape won't last long at all. Keep your brick purring, man, and good luck. Hope it's a simple problem (always check those first). Just my two cents.|||It may be the MAF, they do fail, but you should have a check engine light on if that was the case.

It's more likely that there is a vacuum leak. Get a water spray bottle and spray a stream of water around the intake manifold and see if the idle speed changes. The gaskets often leak around #1 cylinder. Check the vacuum line that is right behind the power steering pump, it deteriorates and leaks too.|||most likley dirty fuel system

Can i use a volvo penta outdrive on a mercruiser engine?

I have a 1972 Starcraft with a 140 mercruiser and a pre alpha outdrive. Can i use a volvo penta outdrive on a mercruiser engine.||| After reading the answers so far, I can understand your confusion. In your exact case, my answer is don't. There are just to many problems, from the differences in the engines, and transom shield, to electrical. tilt and trim etc. Just to much. I love Volvo but I've also worked on OMC and Mercruser. It's easier to repair that you have. Good luck!|||Yes you can but you will need the Volvo Penta SX Outdrive as it has the same basic transom cut out as the Mercruiser. Since both use the chevy 151 cubic inch 4 cylinder the base engines are totally interchangeable

Take off the exhaust manifold bell housing and engine coupler what you have left is all you can usead far as the engine goes. Everything else that is painted Merc black will need to be replaced including what is left bolted to the Transom, with Volvo Penta SX components and including the engine mounted Raw water pump

It would be far cheaper to replace your old unit with one that is a direct bolt on.|||Sounds like you need the following:

Masters in Automotive or Marine Engineering

Production specs of both outdrive systems

Precision manufacturing CAD system.

Multi-million dollar manufacturing facility

Millions of dollars in development, production, and salary expenses.

So unless you have all of this and a few items I might have not mentioned, the answer is a big NO.

|||There is a company that makes an aftermarket replacement out-drives for Mercruiser. They advertise in all the boating magazines. I cannot remember their name now. Anyone know?|||Nope- You can not use your mercruiser engine on a volvo sterndrive. Volvo stern drives have no raw water pump built into them. Merc has a big pump on the input shaft to the lower unit.|||If you can figure out how to adapt a Volvo engine coupler to a Merc flywheel, sure. Is this some kind of science project?|||No. Find a new drive. They are out there.

How do I wire up heated seats from a 2001 Volvo?

I installed seats from a 2001 Volvo into my Jeep CJ5. They have heat panels in the bottoms and backs. Any ideas how to wire them without having the original dash buttons and harness? I'm afraid of burning up the wires and/or seats.|||At the very least you will need a switch to turn them on and off with. I would suggest buying a switch that is designed for heated seats (low and high settings). You definitely should install a fuse in the circuit to keep them from overheating.|||You'll need 12 volts for the high setting and approximately 9 volts for low. You're looking at a current draw of about 4 amps on low and 5 on high.

Volvo may be able to do it for you but will not be very helpful.

Are you sure that the problem is alarm related. The alarm will operate when the battery voltage drops below a certain level. It is a regular occurrence with customers coming in to ask for their alarm to be disconnected because it is draining the battery. On checking the car out more often than not the battery drain is caused by something else and the alarm is only doing what it should do.

It may be worth getting you car checked by an auto electrician looking for a battery drain.|||find the fuse and take it out.|||Its not the alarm that is draining the battery like that. IT may be a bad battery, or you may some some kind of parasitic drain the the car that is dischargin your battery. Even the brand new Volvos (which have a ton more electronic parasitic draw than your 1994) can last about a week without being started before they will need a jumpstart. Get your battery tested, and if it checks out ok, take the car to a mechanic and tell them your problem and they will be able to help you. Hope this helps.|||I wouldnt disable it...sounds like you have a short somewhere. I would suggest taking it in and having the short traced and repaired.

Sometimes it could be as simple as a ground wire off or starting to come off.

But I would definatly have it checked before going to disabling these things.|||its prob not the alarm!!!!!!!! matter of fact i'm almost positive, and if you disable the alarm, it could make it not start. just go get yourbattery tested first

Ahhhhh aaaaahhh (2x)

You got a whole lot left to say now

You knocked all your wind out

You just tried too hard and you froze

I know I know

Just take the fall

You鈥檙e one of us

The spotlight is on

Will be the one thing you鈥檝e got to let go

And when you feel the wall cannot be burned

You鈥檙e gonna die to try what can鈥檛 be done

Gonna stay stay out but you don鈥檛 care

Now is there nothing like the inside of you anywhere

Oh just take the fall
